450 House Development Approved By Rotherham Council
Up to 450 new homes could be built near Worrygoose Lane in Rotherham after an application made by AE Waddington, R Parkes & V Foersplans was approved by the Council in November.
A former greenbelt site, the new Whiston development will be situated near the Worrygoose roundabout.
While the plans have been approved, the development will not be able to proceed until an agreement is made over some highway improvements.
According to the Rotherham Advertiser, the pending factors in the agreement include:
- Widening Worrygoose Lane
- Adding a 500-metre bus lane on the A631 East Bawtry Road to the west
- Widening the approaches onto Broom Lane and Herringthorpe Valley Road
- Adding a pedestrian crossing on West Bawtry Road
Other requirements include measurements to ensure residents have access to education and transport, including £500 per dwelling for sustainable transport and £300,000 for bus services.
This development is part of Rotherham’s Housing Strategy for 2019 – 2022, which proposes that up to 900 new homes need to be built in Rotherham per year to meet the rising local housing demand. Of this figure, 25% will be affordable housing.
Councillor Dominic Beck, the Cabinet Member for Housing, stressed that these developments are “not just about headline numbers” but about “developing a good mix of homes that meets the needs of local people.”
Rotherham Council is working closely with the private sector to ensure new houses are built, while continuing to invest in existing neighbourhoods.
