Rotherham Council reveals bid for £60m government fund to spend across the borough
Rotherham Council have revealed they’ve put in a bid of £60 million for the government’s Levelling Up scheme. The project proposal includes a number of improvements across the borough, including new community spaces, continued regeneration and improvements to some of Rotherham’s key attractions enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
The council is ultimately hoping to boost the local economy and improve the quality of life for residents. The funding will not just be used for Rotherham town itself, but distributed across other areas of the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, including Wath upon Dearne and Dinnington.
We’ve created a round-up of what Rotherham Council are proposing to do with the funding:
- Build a new library and community hub in Wath upon Dearne
- Improve Dinnington High Street and markets
- Create a new outdoor play and educational centre at Rother Valley Country Park
- Transform the riding schools and stables at Wentworth Woodhouse into visitor centres
- New exhibitions created at Magna Science Adventure Centre
- Regeneration of Rotherham Town Centre, including the Riverside Residential Quarter and the Leisure and Culture Quarter.
What is the Levelling Up Fund?
The Levelling Up Fund is a government-backed fund which councils across the UK can apply for on a competitive basis. Once project proposals have been reviewed and selected, the funding will be distributed to places across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
This scheme is set to run for four years from 2021 to 2025, with as much as £4 billion of funding earmarked for England.
If successful, this will be the second time this year that Rotherham will have secured funding from a government-backed scheme, the first being the Future High Street Fund. According to Yorkshire Live, Rotherham is set to receive £12,660,708 to boost the retail scene in the town centre.
