Rotherham Set to Receive Government Funding to Improve Town Centre
A bit of good news for a change! According to YorkshireLive, Rotherham is set to receive £12,660,708 to boost its retail centre and help stem the financial impacts of coronavirus on the town. It is one of five towns in Yorkshire who have successfully applied for the Future High Streets Fund, a government-backed package of £1 billion.
Other Yorkshire towns to secure funding include Elland, Halifax, Barnsley and Northallerton, with the city of Sheffield also receiving a handsome sum.
What will the funding be used for?
These funds could be used for housing, workplaces, infrastructure and culture across Rotherham. Essentially the funding is designed to not only make town centres a better place to live and work for current residents, but to also attract new businesses and visitors.
From repurposing empty retail units into accommodation or office spaces, to improving transport links, there are many ways the funding could be used.
While the Future High Streets Fund was established in 2018, it is more recently being implemented as a way to prevent the uncertain economic climate adversely affecting communities. With over 100 towns currently in the pipeline to receive essential funding, improvements to our high streets should be seen up and down the country.
Hopefully this funding will allow Rotherham to prosper rather than falter and we look forward to seeing the town grow and develop over the next few years.
